Christmas internet traffic hits new highs header image

The amount of people using their broadband connection on Christmas Day grew considerably in 2013.

A number of major internet service providers told ISPreview they received record levels of traffic on their networks.

Virgin Media said usage of its connections was up 55 per cent on Christmas 2012, while Sky reported its traffic nearly doubled.

Lyssa McGowan, Sky brand director, commented: "With the increase in tablets and smartphones and the huge variety of entertainment on offer now, households and families are becoming techier."

Both Sky and BT said traffic peaked at 10pm, with people logging on to social networks like Facebook and Twitter to wish others a merry Christmas and post information about their day.

The high number of tablets and smartphones given as gifts will have also helped to drive network usage up.
