Deloitte predicts 'online Christmas' header image

Online retail is set to increase by 17 per cent this Christmas, while overall spend creeps up by just one per cent, according to a new report from Deloitte.

The company claimed there are plenty of reasons to be positive about UK sales over the winter period, but admitted that most of them are related to the ecommerce sector.

Colin Jeffrey, head of multichannel retail at Deloitte, suggested that "click-and-collect" expected to be used by businesses keen to drive more footfall into their stores.

"Retailers without flexible collection options and mobile services are failing to meet basic customer expectations and will suffer as a result," he added.

This report stresses the damage poor ADSL connections can do to businesses, with offering an online service becoming a key way of staying in touch with web-savvy consumers.

An eBay report recently highlighted a strong link between social media presence and shopping decisions made by Britons.
