Broadband voted 'greatest engineering innovation of noughties' header image

Broadband has been voted the greatest engineering innovation of the last decade by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).

More than half (53 per cent) of the people polled voted for the technology as the greatest feat of the noughties.

Prof Will Stewart of the IET said broadband is "enriching our lives and broadening our horizons in ways that we could only dream of until recently, and yet we all now take for granted".

Broadband was the clear winner of the survey, with the nearest contenders - smartphones and satellite navigation - both receiving ten per cent of the vote respectively.

On-demand television and android phone apps came joint bottom of the poll - both being given just one per cent of the vote.
