Moving home can be one of the most stressful times of a person's life, as you are forced to juggle so many tasks at once to ensure everything goes off without a hitch and to make sure you're not frantically packing boxes and ringing the utility companies as the moving van arrives.
To help you make sure you've done everything you need to before moving day arrives, we've created a checklist for you.
Confirm the date
You can't get the ball rolling until you know the date you can move in - once you have this, you can set things in motion. Don't forget to notify your landlord of the date if you're renting.
If you intend to hire a removal firm to help you move your possessions from your old place to your new one, get quotes as soon as you've got your confirmed moving date. This will allow you to compare prices and get the best deal. You should do the same if you're planning to hire a van or a skip for clearing out the old house.
You should start getting rid of the stuff you don't want or need as soon as you can, as this will give you time to either sell unwanted possessions or take them to a charity shop or tip.
The sooner you let your gas, electricity, water, home insurance and broadband providers know you are moving the better, as they can produce final bills or start the process of switching your service to another property quickly.
This is also a perfect time to review the cost of your utilities, as a new provider could give you a better deal. In addition, the company you currently use may not service your area. For example, the area you're moving to may not be covered by fibre optic broadband, meaning you would need to search for an alternative, such as satellite broadband.
Let your bank know once you've moved, as they will probably need to see proof of address before they change it on the system.
Whatever you do, don't leave packing until the last minute, as this could lead you to lose possessions or break them and will undoubtedly cause unnecessary stress. Ideally, you should start boxing and bagging your stuff around two weeks before the move date, starting with non-essentials.
Buy boxes, bags, tape and bubble wrap in advance to ensure your belongings are protected while being transported between properties.
Doctor and dentist
Inform your doctor, dentist and optician that you are moving so they can de-register you and prepare your notes to be shipped to another practice. When you've moved, sign up to new practices as soon as you can.
Go to your local post office or use the website to redirect your mail, for either three, six or 12 months to give you time to ring around and change your address with relevant companies. At least five working days must be given for the redirect to be actioned, but you can apply to do this up to three months before you move.
Once you've settled in to the new place, make a list of all the firms that need be informed of the address change and send them an e-card or email.
Around two weeks before you move, double-check the details with the removal company or hire car firm and reconfirm when you can pick up the keys for the new property.
And finally, relax!
